Korakukan Theater

The Korakukan was built in 1910 and is the largest existing wooden theater and one of the oldest surviving wooden Kabuki theaters in Japan. The exterior has a Western-style frontal facade and the interior a traditional Japanese design. Tours and several performances are held daily from April to November. The general daily shows are not considered “True Kabuki” and are often humorous and contemporary, a mix of a kabuki play, singing, dancing and rakugo style comedy. Once a year, nationally renowned Kabuki companies perform formal “True Kabuki” performances. The Korakukan was designated as a National Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2002.
